Shaped by Ice

"Shaped by Ice", at the Severn Studio, Brantwood House, Coniston, Cumbria, ran for seven weeks in 2014.

Brantwood was once the home of the eminent nineteenth-century art critic, educator and social thinker John Ruskin.

The ice ages, measured in tens of thousands of years, bridge the gap between a human timescale and a geological one. My intention is to approach the landscape as an object rather than a place - an object undergoing slow but profound change.

In the mountains of western Canada, ice is still shaping the land. The surviving glaciers show us, on a grander scale, the Cumbria of some two hundred lifetimes ago.
